Unpacking Institutional Racism in Australia
Scholarship Description
Institutional racism is racism which results in different patterns of distribution of social goods in a way which regularly and systematically advantages some ethnic and racial groups and disadvantages others. It operates through key institutions of society. This PhD will focus on identification of institutional racism in Australia as organised through social arrangements in unnoticed, unintentional or informal ways. The project will map the layered forms of decision making in institutional structures and processes that result in marginalizing and exclusion of some groups while appearing fair, neutral and ‘normal’. A case study approach to unpacking institutional racism will be adopted. The case study may focus on areas such as health, social welfare, justice or education.
